HE Dr the Chev, Mro Mark Agius

Principal Conductor

Mark Agius was educated at St. Aloysious College. A versatile drummer and world percussionist, he studied percussion under various tutors and later music theory under Ms Marthese Busuttil Cassar, furthering his studies in harmony and counterpoint and attaining his BMusLSM, with honours and FLSM, also with honours, under Ms Rita Psaila. He was also mentored in the writing of libretto and lyrics by his uncle, the poet and song-writer Mr Charles Mifsud and conducting by Mro Joseph Sammut. He graduated from the University of Malta with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and for several years worked with students having disability, collaborating with health professionals to enhance therapies through music as well as being a guest lecturer on exploiting the therapeutic elements of music at the University of Malta. He holds a Doctorate in the administration of educational institutions with specialization in Music Education with I.S.F.O.A. HOCHSCHULE FÜR SOZIALWISSENSCHAFTEN UND MANAGEMENT.

  

Throughout his career Mro Agius has has been responsible for conducting various ensembles covering a wide variety of musical genres  These include the St Cecilia Choir (1989-1995), the UC Concert Band (1993-1999), the Outreach Youth Choir and Orchestra (Founder and Director -1994-2002) and the Academy of Praise and Worship (2002-2013) of which he was co-founder and Director of Music Studies. In 2011 he was appointed Music Director to the newly formed LSM Keyboard Orchestra, later to become an independent, registered organisation in 2013 with its name being changed to Maleth Symphonia Keyboard Orchestra.

 

He is also Founder, Director and Principal Conductor of the St Paul Metropolitan Orchestra and Maestro di Cappella at the church of St Ursula in Valletta as well as a being co-founder, CEO and Chairman of the Medina Foundation for Music, Principal of the Medina College of Music and Director of the Malta Cultural Institute Foundation. 

 

Apart from his musical responsibilities, Mro Agius is Grand Prior of Malta of the Sovereign Hospitaller Order of St John of Jerusalem, Knights of Malta, holding the exalted rank of Bailiff Grand Cross of the Order of St John, and is a member of the Supreme Council of the Order.
